Sunbathing Lioness
8” x 16”
Oil on linen panel
In May of 2023 I and four other artists from the Rochester NY area traveled to South Africa to participate in a 10-day art workshop. It was an experience of a lifetime for me. We went to three game reserves and went on five safaris. Seeing the wildlife in their natural habitat was thrilling. I returned home with over 1000 photos on my camera and phone. I have been painting the people, landscape and wildlife from South Africa ever since.
Our guide during one safari stopped the jeep and announced he was sure we would see the "ladies". We waited and sure enough a few minutes later we heard the grasses rustling and out strolled three lionesses. They walked around the front of the jeep and then each plopped to the ground like house cats in the sun. It was amazing. This painting is based on one of those photos.
