January Morning
8” x 10”
This winter plein air painting is from an outing with The All-Weather Gang just south of LeRoy. You can find this setting if you travel south on East Bethany-LeRoy Road. When the winter sun shines and the low sky is dark, it always makes for a paintable scene! The value contrasts that I seek are found. This one hangs in a carefully chosen Motyka frame, hand-carved and gilded. My mentor, Don Stone always taught about completing the work with the frame selection, and I'm proud of the finish that master craftsman Stephen Motyka adds to present this painting! This painting and the memory of painting it reminds me of the beauty of winter. Check out the progress picture (last)—you can see my sketch and the completed underpainting before I start painting the real color.
The frame is a 3" molding, so in the frame it presents as 14" tall by 16" wide. It's framed as shown ready to hang with felt pads to protect the wall. The canvas panel is a Raymar 56MC Medium Cotton is a professional grade double acrylic primed, 100% pure cotton duck canvas with a medium weave with uniform texture. This is my favorite painting surface because the absorbent canvas grabs the paint for an opaque effect yet keeps my brushstroke visible to vary textured landscape. It particularly suits my technique of underpainting warm compliments in oil washes, which support the "real" color in the final painting. The archival 1/8" MDF has no added oils and the back of the board is sealed with gray melamine to prevent warping and deterioration. The paint is Winsor & Newton professional oil colors which are permanent. The painting is varnished and will last for hundreds of years.
